In order to direct everything in our lives to the greater glory of God, students can find many Masses every day here on campus. The multiplicity of Masses makes it so that no students need spend a day without the graces of the Eucharist and the direction of Holy Scripture.
The first Mass every day takes place in what is likely Boston College’s most beautiful chapel: St. Mary’s. St. Mary’s Chapel is the college’s hidden gem, accessible through a side door on St. Mary’s hall’s western wall.
The chapel is built in the same Collegiate Gothic Style as Gasson Hall, with stained glass windows depicting scenes from Christ’s and the Blessed Virgin’s lives. Side altars in honor of Jesuit saints line each side on either side of the dark wood pews.
Mass takes place there at 8 AM every day of the week, and at noon Monday through Friday.
Later in the morning at St. Joseph’s Chapel on Upper Campus, Fr. Gary Gurtler, S.J., or Fr. Juan Carlos Rivera, S.J., celebrate the Traditional Latin Mass. This Mass is unique in that it is the only Mass on campus celebrated ad orientem (with the priest facing the same direction as the congregation) and in a language no longer commonly spoken. Traditional Latin Mass takes place Monday and Wednesday at noon and Tuesday and Thursday at 11 AM.
The next Mass of the day is celebrated on Newton Campus, at Trinity Chapel. This Mass is an excellent opportunity for Newtonites to attend Mass close to home. The chapel is larger than many on campus with seating for 400, and, also unlike many on campus, boasts a baptistry. Mass is celebrated here Monday through Thursday at noon and at 8 PM on Sundays.
At 12:15 in the afternoon, students can find Mass at the School of Theology and Ministry (STM) Chapel in Simboli Hall on Boston College’s Brighton Campus. The chapel features vaulted ceilings and stained and it allows students at the STM, Greycliff Hall, and 2000 Commonwealth Ave. apartments to easily access Mass, offered here Monday through Friday.
Next, Mass is celebrated at St. Ignatius on Lower Campus. By far the largest church on campus, St. Ignatius serves as a parish for BC students and local residents alike. Mass is offered here Monday through Friday at 5:30 PM, Thursdays at 12:30 PM, Saturday at 4 PM and Sunday at 10:30 AM, 12:30 PM (in Spanish) and 5:30 PM.
Last is the well beloved Candlelight Mass. As discernible from its name, the Mass occurs in St. Joseph Chapel amidst a sea of electric tea candles. This year Candlelight celebrates its fourteenth anniversary, and has a tight knit, yet welcoming community where attendees can often be found talking after Mass on the piazza outside the chapel.
