Cupcakes and Duct Tape: An Inside Look Into BC’s Pro-Life Club

What do cupcakes and duct tape have in common? They were both used by the Pro-Life Club to spread their message of life across Boston College’s campus in the past two weeks!

On Friday, October 7, the Pro-Life Club gave out free cupcakes in the lobby of Mac to students on their way to lunch or class. Members of the club baked and frosted 144 cupcakes in blue and pink frosting the night before. This was part of the National Pro-Life Cupcake Day which takes places every year in early October across the country. With each cupcake was a piece of paper that said, “Because not every child gets a birthday”. This was to remind people that since 1973, close to 60 million children were not given a chance to have a birthday. The purpose of this event was to spread the Pro-Life message in a non-confrontational way. The club reached many people; the cupcakes were gone in less than an hour.

On Tuesday October 18, the Pro-Life Club held another event to spread the Pro-Life message without even speaking. In fact, that was the point. It was the National Pro-Life Day of Silent Solidarity. This day is also a non-confrontational way to spread the Pro-Life message. The point of the day was to not speak, but to be in solidarity with all of those who have no voice, specifically the unborn. Those who participated in this powerful day wore a band of red duct tape on their arm or over their mouth with the word “Life” written on it.

These are just two of the events the Pro-Life at Boston College has put on this semester. The club will have many more happening in the upcoming weeks and months. It has many interesting speakers lined up and will be participating in the March for Life in Washington D.C. this January.

One misconception about the Pro-Life club is that they only talk about abortion. While that is one of the topics the club is passionate about, being Pro-Life is much more than just being against abortion. It is about respecting every human life from conception to natural death. The club talks about and hosts events on topics regarding abortion, immigration, the death penalty, euthanasia, suicide, disabilities, and human trafficking.

They are fighting to make a difference on this campus and in our country, no matter how small the action. It may feel like an uphill battle, but I have so much hope that one day people will look back on this period as a fluke. We will be able to proudly say that we were a part of the fight for a culture of life! All human life is sacred and we will keep fighting until all life is protected. Keep fighting the good fight Pro-Lifers! You are making a difference!
