Boston College has canceled all on-campus classes through the end of the semester, began online classes on Thursday, March 19, and suspended all on-campus academic and extracurricular activities.
Boston College President Fr. William P. Leahy, S.J. announced these measures in a campus-wide letter issued March 11, just after 5:00 P.M.
Additionally, Boston College began the move-out process for on-campus students on Thursday, March 12, at 3 P.M. and closed its residence halls on Sunday, March 15, at 9:00 P.M. for all students except for those with special exemptions.
Leahy acknowledged the difficult discussions and outcomes that went into, and will come from, this decision by the administration.
Leahy concluded in the letter, “I realize that these decisions will bring challenges to many at Boston College particularly members of the Class of 2020. But knowing the abundant spirit, generosity, and commitment of our University community, I am confident that we will resolve any issues we face, and I ask that you join me in praying for those affected throughout the world by COVID-19.”
Other announcements have recently been sent to the Boston College community including a letter from Provost and Dean of Faculties David Quigley addressed to the faculty about teaching remotely and opportunities for declaring classes pass/fail, a notice from BC Dining Services regarding on-campus dining hall hours, an address from Boston College Athletics stating that on-campus games will be played without spectators, and an update from BC Student Services about room and board adjustments.
BC Campus Ministry issued a message to the campus community at 6:30 P.M. on Thursday, March 12, that extended their office drop-in hours from 9 A.M. to 9 P.M. Thursday through Sunday, stated Mass times across campus for this Friday and Sunday, and extended other campus resources offered through the Office of Residential Life, CAB, UGBC, and University Counseling Services. Campus Ministry offers virtual Candlelight Mass through the streaming service Zoom and released a list of virtual resources, especially prayers for the Lenten season and this unprecedented time.
